National Short Term Outlook

Tropical Storm Eta continues to move away from land into the Atlantic.Tropical Storm Eta is forecast to continue moving northeast away from land and become post-tropical today. Marine hazards will remain the main threats today, through some showers could continue over the Outer Banks of North Carolina and also over southern Florida with a developing frontal system. Farther north, rain showers are possible across the Northeast today, with snow showers in northern New England.

Heavy snow likely in higher elevations of the Northwest with rain in lower elevations. As a frontal system comes through the Northwest, a plume of moisture streaming in will lead to widespread precipitation. Snow totals in particular are expected to be heavy, with well over a foot of snow likely in higher elevations of the Cascades and Northern Rockies through Sunday morning. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in place. In lower elevations of the Pacific Northwest, moderoverate to locally heavy rain could cause isolated flooding issues. Another low pressure system is forecast to come through over the weekend, continuing the active weather. High temperatures in the Northwest will be 5 to 15 degrees below normal for the next couple of days.

The initial frontal system is forecast to track eastward fairly quickly through the Rockies tonight, the Plains Saturday, and the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley by Sunday morning. Due to the front, high winds are possible across portions of the Northwest today and eastward into the Rockies/High Plains through Saturday. Rain is expected to develop along and ahead of the front in the Plains toward the Midwest over the weekend, with some light snow possible in the Upper Midwest.
