Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and Jewel-Osco Team Up For Hunger Action Month

August 31, 2020 (Merrillville) – September is Hunger Action Month, a time to bring attention to the hunger crisis nationally and locally. The Feeding America Network and 200 Member Food Banks nationwide are creating awareness and raising funds to support the approximately 42 million individuals dealing with hunger daily.

The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is working with several local corporate and community partners to highlight and address the needs of individuals and families facing hunger in Lake and Porter Counties. “Prior to COVID-19, there were nearly 93,000 individuals in Northwest Indiana considered food insecure—unsure about where day to day meals would come from. That number has greatly multiplied during the pandemic”, said Victor A. Garcia, President & CEO of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. “Hunger Action Month is a time that we dedicate to serving families at a greater capacity”.

Retail chain, Jewel-Osco, is the official sponsor of Hunger Action Month, and has been working alongside the Food Bank to provide increased financial support over the last several months. “Jewel-Osco has a long-standing commitment to hunger relief and working with partners to distribute food to those most in need. We are grateful for the generosity of our customers, whose donations to our Nourishing Neighbors Community Relief campaign are helping the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana fight hunger during these difficult times,” said Jewel-Osco President Mike Withers.

The Food Bank is hosting a series of Hunger Action Month initiatives to mobilize and engage the community in providing critical food assistance to people facing hunger across the Region. Included are 2 Mega Mobile Market food distributions serving nearly 1,000 families. Mega Mobile Market Lake County will be held on Saturday, September 12th, 10am – 12pm, at the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana in Merrillville, and will serve 650 families. Mega Mobile Market Porter County will be on Saturday, September 26th, 8am – 10am, at St. Teresa of Avila in Valparaiso, and will serve 350 families.

“Hunger has a huge impact on Northwest Indiana and in the lives of our neighbors,” said Garcia. “It takes more than just a few people fighting hunger to make a difference—it takes a community. We encourage everyone to get involved in the fight against hunger—whether you volunteer, donate, or simply take a few minutes to learn more about hunger in our region, it will make a big difference in the lives of the people we serve.”

This year’s Hunger Action Month campaign encourages individuals to take just one action to positively impact and provide hope for our food insecure neighbors. For the full list of opportunities, visit: http://www.foodbanknwi.org/hungeractionmonth.
