Ice Storm Warning for Chicago and Western Suburbs. Ice Advisory for South, Southwestern Suburbs and Northwest Indiana

A threat of freezing rain and significant ice accumulation exists across parts of northern IL and northwest IN tonight. Freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet north, is expected to develop into the I-39 corridor of north central IL late this afternoon, then spread east across the remainder of the area early this evening. While temperatures will likely warm above freezing by midnight from Pontiac to Kankakee and Gary, areas farther north will see freezing rain persist through the night. Ice accumulations ranging from 0.1″ to 0.4″ are possible, which may lead to hazardous travel conditions as well as tree and power line damage.

Freezing rain and sleet will develop from west to east late this afternoon into early this evening. Significant ice accumulation is possible overnight across much of northern IL. Precipitation will taper off to spotty light rain Wednesday as temperatures warm above freezing, though another brief period of lighter freezing rain is possible across far northern IL Wednesday night. A brief period of mild weather is expected Thursday, before colder air arrives at the end of the week.
