Snow will spread east over the area this evening and early overnight. The snow will become heavy at times into overnight before easing in intensity quickly Monday morning. Patchy blowing snow is likely in open areas tonight into early Monday. There will be impacts, likely significant, to the Monday morning commute due to snow covered roads. By mid-late morning Monday, any snow is likely to be light, though freezing drizzle is possible. As winds pick back up and temperatures drop Monday afternoon, blowing snow will be possible again.
From late Tuesday through early Thursday, brutally cold temperatures and potentially life threatening wind chills will be the rule across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. During the coldest period from Tuesday night through Wednesday night, wind chills are expected to fall below -40 degrees in many locations. Starting Tuesday morning, actual temperatures will not climb above the single digits until Friday afternoon.
