A late-season winter storm will move into the region tonight and will bring wet snow, heavy at times, especially to western and southern parts of the forecast area. Snow may mix with rain as it tapers off Saturday afternoon and early evening. Dry weather returns Sunday, before wet but milder weather sets in for the first half of next week.

Although the potential for snow has increased, this is a relatively narrow band of snow that will enter the region. The total snowfall will vary however may change if the snow storm moves north or south of the predicted area. Check the weather and road conditions for your destination before you travel. It is likely some areas may not receive snow, however the further north or south you travel that could drastically change.

Winter Storm Warning

Potential for a significant late season winter storm continues to increase across parts of the area from late this evening through mid-afternoon Saturday. Precipitation will develop from the west this evening, possibly starting as rain. Snow will be the primary type by overnight into Saturday morning and heavy at times, especially in the yellow and orange shaded areas on the map. There will very likely be a sharp gradient in snowfall amounts between the purple lines, including the Rockford area and into the Chicago metro. Snow will end from northwest to southeast Saturday afternoon. Plan for hazardous travel in much of the Winter Warning, and Winter Storm Watch areas by late Friday night and into the day Saturday. The snow will be wet and heavy, and with gusty winds likely will stick to many surfaces. The heavier weight of the snow also will be difficult to shovel for some.
