Saturday30Snow should wind down this evening, with the better accumulating snow ending early this evening followed by lingering light snow/flurries with little or no additional accumulation through late evening. Low temps will likely not be reached for most areas until after sunrise Saturday morning. Northwest winds will ramp up as well Saturday morning and likely send wind chills tumbling to around -20 over northern/western portions of the area. Currently looks like Sunday night into Monday morning could be the coldest period of this most recent batch of arctic air before a modest moderation takes place Tuesday into Tuesday night. The cold temperatures on New Year’s Day could threaten or break records in Chicago and Rockford.

Saturdaywindchill

A renewed shot of bitterly cold air will arrive early Saturday, along with gusty northwest winds. This will result in wind chill values as cold as 15° to 25° below zero in portions of northern Illinois, for which a Wind Chill Advisory is in effect. Avoid prolonged time outdoors if possible. If spending time outdoors, follow cold weather safety precautions to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Keep pets indoors.
